Ps: 我用英文学习圣经,所以有关圣经的分享,我都会用英文分享。
what makes up God's covenant
what makes up God's covenant ^

The 3 'C's of a covenant are

  1. Counterparts: Who is involved?

  2. Content: What does the covenant entail?

  3. Consequences: What happens when the covenant is kept or not kept?

Example: A agrees to meet B for dinner on Friday, at 6pm.

  • Counterparts: A & B

  • Content: Dinner on Friday, at 6pm

  • Consequences: if A shows up, A and B will have dinner together. If A does not show up, B will have dinner alone.

Examples of Covenants from the Bible

1. Moses' Era

  • Counterparts: Between God & the Israelites (the chosen people then)

  • Content: 10 Commandments, covenant sealed in blood

  • Consequences: If the Israelites obeyed, they will be to God a kingdom of priests & a holy nation. If the Israelites disobeyed, they will be destroyed

  • Reference: Exodus 19:5-6 , Exodus 20-23, Exodus 24:7-8 , Deuteronomy 28

Outcome of covenant: Israelites disobeyed and were destroyed 😭

  • 1st generation of Israelites died in the wilderness

  • Israel and Judah was defeated by Babylon

  • At the time of Jesus' 1st coming, Israel was under the Roman empire

Deuteronomy 28
Blessings for Obedience: v1-14; Curses for Disobedience: v15-68

Examples of blessings & curses
- v7 vs v25: Enemies defeated & flee vs defeated & flee before enemies
- v13 vs 44: Become the head & not the tail vs Become the tail & foreigners are the head

Fulfilment of curses for disobedience: eating their own children
- Deuteronomy 28 v53, 57: People will eat their own children
Also in Leviticus 26:29: You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters.
- Jeremiah 52:5-6: City under siege, famine
- Lamentations 4:9-10: Compassionate women boiled their own children

As a result of breaking the covenant, the old promise no longer stands. God instituted a new covenant between Himself and a new group of chosen people.

John 1:10-13 10
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Chosen people of God today = anyone who believes in Jesus.

[Luke 20:22] And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

New covenant for Christians today has been sealed with Jesus' blood.

2. 1st Coming & Beyond

  • Counterparts: Between God & Christians (the chosen people of today)

  • Content: 10 Commandments + Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)

  • Consequences: If Christians obey, they will be united with God in heaven. If Christians disobey, they will be cast out into hell for judgment

  • Reference: Matthew 5-7, Matthew 13:24-30

Outcome of covenant: ?? Will we keep the covenant today?

[Deuteronomy 30:19-20 19]
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Let us choose life together, that we may live. Let us be wheat and not weeds to be gathered into God's barn on the day of harvest.
