Meaning of Fire in the Bible

Jeremiah 23:29

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

Spiritual Fire = God's word

Fire Baptism

  • Luke 24:32 They (the disciples) asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

  • 1 Peter 1:7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Baptism with the word of God = Fire Baptism, purified by God's word

Unauthorized Fire

  • Numbers 3:4 Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai.

Fires lighted up are to be done according to God's word or there will be consequences.

  • Revelation 8:8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood,

Fire burns up and exposes deeds.

Censor in the Bible

Revelation 5:8 Prayer and Incense
Revelation 5:8 Prayer and Incense *
Spiritual Incense = Prayers of God's people / saints

Bible Verse References:

  • Revelation 5:8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.

  • Psalm 141:2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

Incense --> light up with fire --> smoke rise up to reach God

[Leviticus 16:12-13] He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain. He is to put the incense on the fire before the Lord, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die.

Prayer by God's saints ---> lighted up by God's fire (=word) ---> acknowledged by God

[John 15:7] If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Prayer according to God's word will be acknowledged by God `

How should be pray according to God's will?

[Matthew 6:5-13]

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

Futile Prayers

Prayers not according to God's word will be considered futile prayers.

Bible Verse References:

  • Isaiah 16:12 And when Moab presents himself, when he wearies himself on the high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.

  • Malachi 1:10 Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand.

  • James 4:2-3 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
